Pioneering Thin Client and Digital Signage Innovations

For over 22 years, Australia’s ThinLinX Pty Ltd has led the way in developing high-performance thin client and IoT hardware and software. Founded by husband-and-wife team John and Jeanne Nicholls, we’ve achieved numerous world-first milestones, including:

  • 2010: World’s First RemoteFX Hardware Decoder – Our in-house designed TLX400 single- and dual-display thin client, featuring Microsoft RemoteFX/Calista hardware decoding, was showcased in the Microsoft TechEd keynote in New Orleans. Watch the behind-the-scenes video (4 minutes) below for a glimpse into the excitement.
  • 2011: World’s First RemoteFX App for Apple Devices – We brought high-performance Windows desktops to iMacs, MacBooks, Mac minis, and iPads via our RemoteFX software decoder.
  • 2015: World’s First Citrix HDX on Raspberry Pi – Our TLXOS operating system leveraged the affordable US$35 Raspberry Pi’s H.264 hardware decoder for seamless Citrix HDX Windows desktops.
  • 2016: World’s First VMware Blast on Raspberry Pi – Extending TLXOS to deliver VMware Horizon Blast performance on the same low-cost hardware.

ThinLinX – Secure, simple, and seriously affordable endpoint solutions since 2003.

Showcasing Our Legacy

In 2011, founders John and Jeanne Nicholls demonstrated the dual-display TLX400 RemoteFX/Calista thin client at Microsoft TechEd in Atlanta, alongside our RemoteFX app running on a MacBook Air.

ThinLinX was honored with Microsoft’s RemoteFX Premier Partner Award for our contributions. This inspired our development of a custom ARM-based System on Chip (SoC) with integrated RemoteFX/Calista decoding.

Advanced Hardware Innovations

We expanded our lineup with:

  • TLX1000: Low-cost single-display model using Texas Instruments DM3730 SoC for superior RemoteFX, Citrix HDX, and VMware Horizon performance.
  • TLX2000: Dual-display version with Power over Ethernet, dual 1Gbit Ethernet, and TI DM8148 SoC.
  • TLX3000: Dual-display powerhouse with PoE, 6x USB ports, HDMI/VGA outputs, and STMicro SPEAr1340 SoC—designed as a precursor to our custom TLX1 SoC.

ThinLinX commenced development of our own ARM Architecture custom System on Chip (SoC) with an integrated RemoteFX / Calista hardware decoder.

Though funding constraints halted full TLX1 SoC production, these devices set new standards in thin client efficiency.

We also developed the Dual Display TLX3000 with integrated Power over Ethernet, 6 x USB Ports, HDMI and VGA outputs, this model used a STmicro SPEAr1340 SoC which was pin compatible with our own RemoteFX / Calista decoder TLX1 SoC.  We designed this board to have a known working Thin Client using the SPEAr1340, our under development TLX1 SoC was based on the pin compatible SPEAr13xx which was to be customized by adding our own RemoteFX hardware decoder licensed from Microsoft and a H.264 hardware decoder. Swapping out the SPEAr1340 for our own TLX1 SoC had many advantages including lower cost once manufactured in high volume. Unfortunately we had insufficient funds to finalize development of the TLX1 SoC and the TLX3000

Transition to Software Excellence

In 2014, we pivoted from hardware to focus on our Linux-based operating system, TLXOS, supporting affordable ARM devices like Raspberry Pi and most x86 systems. Paired with our powerful ThinLinX Management Software (TMS), TLXOS enables seamless remote management, upgrades, and secure deployments.
